The national pension system provides money to those above the retirement age, and when they become disabled due to illness, injury or death.
Enrolling in the pension system
National Pension
Residents of Japan who are between 20 and 59 years old and who are not covered by Employees’ Pension Insurance are required to enroll in the national pension system and to pay the premiums.
Please apply for this at the National Health Insurance and Pension Section.
Employees’ Pension Insurance
Individuals that work at a company are enrolled in Employees’ Pension Insurance.Your employer will handle the enrollment procedures.
Types of pension
The pensions available include the old-age basic pension, disability basic pension, and survivors’ basic pension.
Old-age basic pension
Available once you turn sixty-five.To receive it, you must pay national pension premiums for ten years or more.
Disability basic pension
This is paid to residents who become disabled due to an illness or injury.They need to have been enrolled in the national pension system when they received the first medical diagnosis.
Survivors’ basic pension
This is paid when a family member enrolled in the national pension system has passed away.
Foreign residents who will be withdrawing from the Japanese pension system and returning to their home country can receive a lump-sum payment upon withdrawal.
