Types of tax

Your income tax amount is determined based on your annual income (i.e., between January 1 and December 31).If you work for a company, your taxes are withheld and the company pays them for you by deducting the amount from your salary every month. All other persons must file a tax return (procedure to pay taxes for the year) at a local tax office between mid-February and mid-March.

Foreign residents who will be leaving Japan must file and pay taxes before they depart.

You can obtain a tax withholding slip (a form that lists your total income from January 1 to December 31), which is necessary for filing taxes, from your company.
