Public medical insurance
Residents of Japan must enroll in some kind of public medical insurance (health insurance) so they can receive treatment for illnesses and injuries with peace of mind.When you enroll in a medical insurance, you will receive an insurance card.By enrolling in public medical insurance, you can receive treatment at 10 to 30 percent of the total medical expenses incurred.
When you enroll in public medical insurance, you must pay insurance premiums.
There are three types of public medical insurance:
Company health insurance (health insurance association, mutual aid association, seamen’s insurance, etc.)
Apply at your place of employment.
National Health Insurance
Apply at the National Health Insurance and Pension Section.
Residents of Japan (including foreign residents) up to the age of seventy-four who are not enrolled in health insurance supplied by a company or other organization and living in Japan for longer than three months are required to enroll.
People between the ages of 40 and 64 also pay together for nursing care insurance premiums.
Nursing care insurance is a system that pays for the cost of nursing care when you need it.
Latter-stage elderly health insurance
Those who are age seventy-five or above who are living in Japan for longer than three months and have completed resident registration with their municipality are automatically enrolled.
