When a disaster occurs
When a disaster occurs, please try to follow the guideline below. However, you do not have to be able to follow all of it.
- First, protect yourself
- Stay calm and collect information
- If it is dangerous to stay at your home, evacuate to a temporary retreat center or evacuation shelter.
First, protect yourself
- Check What to do when an earthquake strikes (internal link) for information related to earthquakes.
- In principle, do not go outside during a typhoon unless it is dangerous to stay at your
home. In that case, evacuate early.
Stay calm and collect information
Urayasu City will send out information via the following methods.
(All information is issued in Japanese.)
- Disaster prevention radio
- City vehicle with a speaker
- Urayasu City website
- Urayasu City X (former Twitter)
- “Important Notification Email”
Information such as on fire, disaster prevention, crime prevention is sent via LINE or e-mail. You must apply to use this service. Free of charge.

If you are using NTT DoCoMo, KDDI (au), Softbank, Y Mobile or Rakuten Mobile, you will receive information from the Japan Meteorological Agency and Urayasu City on your cellphone.No registration or fees required. - L-Alert
If a disaster strikes, the city office will notify you such as by TV, radio ,and internet. - Yahoo! Disaster Alert

If it is dangerous to stay at your home, go to an evacuation shelter or temporary retreat center.

There is a danger of COVID-19 infection in places where many people gather.
If your home is safe or you can evacuate to a friend’s home, stay in those places instead of going to an evacuation shelter or temporary retreat center.
Evacuate immediately in the following cases
- if you are in a dangerous area or the city issues evacuation instructions
- when there is a fire near you
- if there is a danger of a tsunami or landslide
- if your home is on fire and the fire has reached the ceiling
- if your home may collapse
- if an explosion may occur in your home
Clothing to wear when evacuating
- wear long sleeves and long pants (cotton clothing is preferable)
- wear a helmet or disaster prevention hood
- wear shoes with thick soles that are easy to walk in
- carry your belongings in a backpack
Do the following before you evacuate
- shut off the main gas valve
- turn off the electricity breaker
- write down where you are headed on a piece of paper and post it in a place where it can easily be seen from outside your house.
Beware of the following while evacuating
- whenever possible, avoid walking on narrow roads, next to walls, vending machines and other objects that can topple, alongside rivers or under glass windows and billboards.
- help children, those with disabilities and the elderly, and evacuate with them.

- Help each other
